- Aganova’s Nautilus system, in collaboration with SUEZ, was deployed to assess a 100-year-old pipeline for Bristol Water in Somerset, identifying a major leak of 32.59 m³/hour and providing crucial data for infrastructure improvements
Bristol, United Kingdom | September 20, 2024 — Aganova, in collaboration with SUEZ, has successfully deployed its Nautilus system to inspect a 100-year-old cast iron pipeline in Somerset, Southwest England.
The project was carried out for Bristol Water, serving approximately 1.2 million people. It identified three pipeline incidents, including a major leak with a flow rate of 32.59 m³/hour.
Improving Efficiency Through Targeted Technology
This one-day pilot addressed a suspected leak in a rural, hard-to-access area of the network. Therefore, Bristol Water turned to the advanced in-line detection solution offered by Aganova and operated by SUEZ.
The Nautilus system performed the inspection without interrupting water supply, confirming its ability to deliver fast, accurate assessments under complex conditions.
Key Project Parameters
The pipeline inspection revealed the following technical specifications:
Pipeline Length: 6,695 meters
Diameters: 33 inches and 24 inches
Flow Speed: 1 m/s to 0.4 m/s
Pressure Range: 1 to 6 bar
Material: Cast iron
Inspection Duration: 2 hours
Leak Identified: 32.59 m³/hour
Moreover, eight synchronizers were installed along the 7 km route to ensure precise data collection during the test.
From Detection to Action: Digital Precision
Aganova’s analysis team in Málaga, Spain, reviewed the data and pinpointed the exact coordinates of the leak. This information was delivered to Bristol Water via the Nemo digital platform, enabling accurate repair planning and efficient intervention.
As a result, the utility can now address critical issues without delay, improving service reliability and optimizing resource use.
A Model for Sustainable Water Management
This pilot highlights the value of strategic collaboration between Aganova, SUEZ, and Bristol Water. Together, the partners leveraged advanced technology to reduce losses and strengthen infrastructure.
Bristol Water—regulated by Ofwat, the water services authority in England and Wales—continues investing in innovative tools like Nautilus. These solutions help enhance system sustainability and long-term performance.
