A Strategic Partnership for Sustainable Water Management
Madrid, April 29, 2024 – Microsoft has partnered with Aganova, a leader in in-line pipe assessment and leak detection, to launch a pioneering water replenishment initiative in Spain.
This forward-looking project harnesses AI-powered technologies to set a new benchmark for smart and sustainable water resource management.
Combating Water Scarcity Through Innovation
The project, developed in collaboration with the Mancomunidad de Aguas del Sorbe (MAS), near Madrid, is designed to modernize leak detection strategies and reduce water loss in trunk mains.
More importantly, it reinforces both companies’ shared commitment to addressing global water challenges through advanced technology.
Microsoft’s participation is part of its broader commitment to becoming water positive by 2030, a goal guided by five strategic pillars:
Reducing water use intensity
Replenishing more water than it consumes
Increasing access to safe water and sanitation
Scaling water solutions through innovation
Advocating for effective water policy
Through this partnership, Microsoft is funding leak identification efforts led by Aganova in MAS’s water network to conserve resources and improve resilience to drought.
AI as a Catalyst for Scalable Water Solutions
“The global volume of freshwater lost due to leaks is around 346 million cubic meters per day—nearly 30% of system input worldwide,” noted Eliza Roberts, Water Lead at Microsoft. “AI provides a tremendous opportunity to scale leak detection, and we’re excited by this project’s use of technology for responsible water management.”**
Aganova’s Role in Driving Water Replenishment
Aganova brings to the project its expertise in non-invasive, in-line pipe assessment and its proprietary platforms Nautilus and Nemo, which leverage AI and acoustic sensing.
CEO Agustín Ramírez emphasized the transformative power of these solutions to modernize leak detection and enable targeted, cost-effective repairs. “This project is a model for how technology and collaboration can transform water management,” he added.
Marcos Barrera, COO at Aganova, praised MAS for its leadership in adopting advanced technologies to tackle water loss. “MAS’s commitment to sustainability and operational excellence serves as a beacon of inspiration for other utilities in Europe and beyond,” he said. “By embracing transformative partnerships, MAS shows a clear commitment to community well-being and environmental responsibility.”
A Blueprint for the Future of Water Stewardship
This collaboration between Microsoft and Aganova signals a broader shift in how corporations and utilities approach sustainability and water resilience.
In a time of growing environmental risk, projects like this will help set new standards for global stewardship and innovation in water management.
